Rightsbot is operated by our Security Group and searches the Internet for illegal material, mostly copyrighted items protected on behalf of our clients. Rightsbot is unique in that it runs both automatically and manually - the crawler is active on the Web following links exactly like any other search engine robot, but is also tied to the workstations of our staff. Wherever they go, Rightsbot takes a look. This ensures that the maximum coverage possible is inspected, but also items that are only recognisable by human intervention are still cataloged.
If your site has been visited or indexed by rightsbot, you will normally have no reason to be concerned. We index millions of web pages, 99% of which are lawful and pass by without action. If we detect rights infringement, rightsbot increases interest and will flag the site to a human operator, but most people only find out when they receive legal notice to terminate.
Rightsbot operates on a series of IP addresses based in the USA, Canada and Europe. Blocking access based on agent string will usually flag your site for human inspection, and we ensure that if your site has no prosecutable content we take no further interest, will not store the crawled information nor do we pass your details to any third party. The Rightsbot database is secure and is never made available.
