Playing web radio 'streams' from Icecast, Icecast2 or Shoutcast through Flash has always been a problem, and the public demand for a player is huge - well it's still far from easy to write the Actionscript code needed to deliver web radio but we've done it. Minicaster is a modification of our world-leading range of website MP3 playheads specifically designed to deliver Icecast2/Shoutcast without the memory problems other playheads can suffer from. What's more, its FREE!
For playheads that deliver 'normal' single-track MP3 files from a playlist, take a look at our main catalog. We have playheads for audio and video in a huge range of designs, each with unique world-leading features such as our Skipjack™ engine.
Minicaster is supplied in a ZIP file with full documentation and examples. You don't get the source code in the free version, but our extendedReporting engine means you can troubleshoot your setup without needing the Flash 8 IDE! We regret that due to the fact it's free, you don't get product support. There's plenty of help in the supplied documentation, but the details of your stream server setup are frankly not our problem!
The version of Minicaster available here can pause playback (when paused, downloading is also stopped) and communicates with your webpage using JavaScript to change settings or show errors. It doesn't use the transport buttons found on 'normal' playheads (next/rewind/etc.) as for a web radio server there's no way to change the playback position - everyone hears the music 'live' and can't ask to go back or forward. There are also limits on the type of music Flash can play - the radio station has to be sending MP3 files instead of AAC, OGG or something esoteric, and in a standard bit rate. For information on what types of audio Flash will support and which it won't, refer to our guide.
