Font Questions
Will you make me a font for...?
No. Those who know me, know I have about 30 seconds spare time in a month, and looking for low-paid high-hassle jobs from random members of the public rates up there with bleaching the bathroom of a tour bus. I design fonts because I like doing it, but I don't look for work. Any messages starting with "can you make..." are filtered out by dwarves. Six of them. One died.
Where do you get your ideas from?
All over the place. Most of the time, whoever needs the font has an idea of what it should "mean", but other designs come from lyrics, signs seen from an Interstate, and life in general. I'm a natural scribbler and if I'm left alone with a pen for too long, everything will have a spiral on it.
What do you use to make fonts?
All fonts eventually run through Fontlab, which creates the final Postscript or Truetype/Opentype files. The original artwork can be anything from a scribbled idea on the back of a menu, to photographs or digital sketches in Illustrator. The process of turning a sketch into a font is the complex part, and is why a lot of my journals are still full of ideas yet to be fulfilled.
Can I use your font for...?
Read the small print on the page you're collecting it from. Use for 'personal' reasons like a website, artwork or tattoo will be fine, but use for commercial products (books, album inserts, merchandise, etc) will need permission - so ask me first. I usually say yes, but the Evanescence font has special limitations as the band merchandise is trademarked. Your requests will again be processed by my remaining cohort of dwarves - as I'm of course never actually here.
Can you give me the font for...?
Don't ask me for copies of other work I do. On this page is all you're going to get, and many of my clients don't allow us to mention our involvement in their project. I will not produce versions or conversions on request, period. The reason I release some free examples of my work on this website is not to attract more - I have enough to do, and enough in the bank. They're released for one simple reason - it helps promotion of the artist, movie or product. Provided our clients are OK with it, you get them. That's all there is to it.
