The Evanescence Font

The band's signature font was created for them as Fallen was in design. Since then, different designs have been created for their DVD, but for some strange reason everyone still wants the original.

The font gives you a full alphabet plus the variant characters (such as the encircled E and logo). This Series B font is harder to use. There are MANY copies of some characters and you'll have to pick the correct one for each phrase by going into the ALT-codes. Welcome to the way the pros work.

Do not remove the copyright from the files or I will personally remove your arms and make you eat them, wet end first.

The full font is shown below in a Flash 8 document. Right-click and select 'Zoom' to inspect the characters in detail.

Download the files

Choose the type you want and download them here - if you're using Windows and you're not a professional designer then you'll want the TrueType file.

Font Type
Description
TrueType
download
The version for Windows/Mac users, just download into a temporary folder.
IMPORTANT!: Don't download directly into your Windows/Fonts folder. In order for Windows to 'install' a font, it must be copied into the Fonts folder from another folder on your computer and not saved there directly from the Internet. Such is Windows, such is life...
Postscript
Type 1
download
Suitable for Linux/Unix users and Mac people who prefer PS versions. In order to use outside Unix or Win2000 you'll need to have Adobe Type Manager installed. The ZIP file contains the AFM, PFM, PFA and INF files. You also can't have a TTF,OTF and PFA version of the same font installed at the same time.
Printer Font Binary
download
For Adobe Type Manager users, the PFB file will be required in addition to the PFM.
Prespaced TrueType
SPECIAL VERSION
download
This is a prespaced font. All the fonts above use special overlapping characters, so you can type the band name and track titles and they'll appear right. This TrueType font has no overlaps and so can be used for normal text without problems, but to create the layout used by the band on their CDs you'll need either a DTP package, or the above versions. You can install both this and the normal TTF versions together without problems. Point to the anal - this is a prespaced font, not a monospaced font. The characters have different widths but positive bounds.

How do I print the variant characters?

Each font contains the full ASCII alphabet (A-Z, 0-9 and punctuation). Some characters are modified to give the 'variants'. Under Windows, you can see these using Character Map, or from 'Insert.. Symbol' in Microsoft Word and its siblings. For all Windows programs you can type these 'extended' characters by holding down the ALT key and typing a 4-figure number. Here are some of the codes:

special character codes

The extended cross used in the logo is the plus (+) key. The high arc used in My Immortal is the vertical line or pipe (|) key, shift-\. The twin-scroll is the ~. You can find the rest yourself, consider it a test.

Important Information - Series B special characters

The label designers wanted each track title to look unique, so they each use slightly altered versions of each character, in terms of size, position, spacing and shape. To achieve this we morph the characters as graphic shapes instead of font glyphs, but to allow you to get the same effect (ish) I have added several copies of the common characters (E,L,o,T etc). You'll have to play to see which one is used in each track, I'm just not in the mood to hand-feed you like the babies you sometimes are.

How do I install the font(s)?

First right-click and save the correct version from the table above (99% of people will want the TrueType file but Unix/Mac/IBM3081 users will probably want the Postscript files). Best to save it somewhere sensible but DO NOT save it directly to your fonts folder or it won't install!
Under Windows 98/Me/XP/2000, just dragging and dropping the file into your Windows Fonts folder will install them (you usually see a little progress bar as it installs). Alternately, you can go to Control Panel...Fonts and then click File.. Install new font. Browse to where you've saved the files, select the one you wish to install and make sure 'Copy to Windows Fonts Folder' is ticked. Press OK and it's done!

Remember, you can't install the postscript fonts directly under Windows unless you're using Win2000. For other versions you'll need a copy of Adobe Type Manager. Another quirk of Windows is that if you're using the old Issue A font you have to delete it before you can install the new one - font installing don't give you an 'Overwrite?' option.

The font doesn't show up right.. you suck.

No, you do. I'm beyond reproach, if you don't believe me ask the record execs I've slapped over the years. The font files are 100% standard and have been tested on MS Office, OpenOffice, Adobe, Macromedia, Corel, Quark and Gimp software. If your system shows boxes or blank characters then it's your screw-up, not mine. Uninstall the font, reinstall the font, try again.

Can I get the font used on the DVD or the new album?

NO. There are some amateur copies out there of the ABH font, but you're not getting anything official from here.

What can I use it for?

The fonts are issued for personal use only (such as websites), and as a means to generate nonprofit publicity material for the band, such as tour flyers and so on. No commercial sale of the font or goods rendered using the font is permitted without permission from us. Under the terms of the associated trademarks you are expressly forbidden to use the fonts to produce merchandise of any description covered by the trademark clauses held by the band and their management.

For information on the list of encompassed items, contact Wind-up Records - but pretty much everything is covered, from music CDs to kitchen appliances. Any breach of these terms of use could result in prosecution - and trust me, you don't wanna see Amy pissy with you. Short but powerful, even in the bathtub.

Can I put a copy of the font files on my website?

We would prefer a link, but if you really want to then you can - provided you put a backward link to this page, clearly state the copyright ownership and add the limitation statement (in blue above). If we find anyone using the fonts uncredited we will throw sharpened farm implements at their reproductive organs.

How do I use it on my website?

Unlike word-processing documents like Word, web pages cannot 'embed' fonts. Microsoft tried a dynamic load-on-demand system for fonts but it was terrible and defeated by most firewall systems, so nobody uses it anymore. Web browsers can be told to show text in a particular font by using CSS styles, but this requires that the person viewing the page has the same fonts installed. If not, they see only the default font. To show you the idea

This line uses Evanescent font styling

If you have the font installed, you'll see the text above correctly. If not you'll just see it as the default (Arial, Helvetica or Times). Unfortunately there's not an easy way in HTML to tell if someone has a font installed, and since the Evanescence font isn't widely used, hardly anyone visiting your site would get to see the text looking like you intended. The solution is to create images of the text and put them on your site instead - or create your page in Flash, as that can embed fonts.
